May. 14th, 2002

Well, there was a baby in the bed when I went to crash, but she slept well all night--didn't kick me, didn't wake up every half hour demanding water--and I also slept well. So well, in fact, that I didn't wake up until nine this morning. I hadn't set my alarm clock, not wanting to wake her prematurely, but I figured that she would wake up by seven as she normally does. Not today. I had to wake her.

First thing I did, I got up and called in to tell my boss I'd be late. Second thing I did, I called her grandmother to tell her we'd be late. Then we took a shower and got dressed and dashed out the door. I arrived at work at eleven. I'm going to call it sick time, since after all, Rosa is sick.

Lurking in my email when I arrived at work:

"Please make arrangements to attend an all Employee Meeting today, May 14, at 3:45 p.m."

Never before has an all-employee meeting been called on such short notice. Nor has one ever been actually "all-employee": they've always scheduled two so that no more than half of us would be away at the same time. Nor have we had a meeting so close on the tail of the preceding one.

None of those are good omens. Yipes.

Hmm. Had a thought of what this mysterious employee meeting might be about. I'm guessing a big change at the top. CEO or one of the other big shots resigned or was abruptly forced out. It doesn't make sense that it would be an announcement of layoffs, because you'd think they would have more advance notice than half a day for something like that.

We'll find out soon.

Fuck. What do you say? I was just called in to a "stand-up meeting in the conference room" which turned out to be for the purpose of clearing everyone out of the way so Kimmie could leave quietly. She got laid off. Now we know part of what's coming at the all-employee meeting, I think.

So I still have a job, but whoa. This is chilling.

34 people laid off.

Hiring freeze to continue.

Wage freeze for everyone with anniversary date after 1 May.

Time off accrual freeze 1 May thru 30 Sept. (That amounts to about 7 days' vacation time at my accrual rate.)

And on top of all the ~~excitement at work today, Rosa's illness turns out to be ear infections. She seems to be doing better but when I took her out to Macaroni Grill for our Tuesday night date she only ate a few bites of her mac-n-cheese and then wanted to go home. I had the waitress box up my food before I even took a bite, and brought her home to put her to bed.

When I got home, Kimmie had called. I called her back. She wanted to talk about things, seemed like she was taking it well, so that was good. I think maybe she'll continue to be a friend, though I'm not sure we have a lot in common.
