Cold snap (Cold? Snap!)
Jan. 4th, 2018 12:12 pmThe last couple weeks since Christmas have been unusually cold here, at least in comparison to the last several years. While Randall Munroe isn't wrong--I moved to St Louis in 1990, and winters were far more severe back then--it's still not what we've become accustomed to. When after a week of highs below 15 degrees, it was over 20 degrees F the other afternoon, it actually felt warm. I left my gloves and hat and scarf off and my jacket unzipped.
Back to cold this morning, though. I went outside with wet hair from a recent shower (yes, I had a hat on, I'm not an idiot) and the ends froze while walking the 20 feet between my house and my car. No snow left on the ground though, it has all sublimated.
The cold is making me rather nostalgic. I grew up in Wisconsin, and this (plus a ton more snow) is what winter is supposed to feel like. Snow is supposed to crunch and squeak when you walk on it, not squelch. Your face is *supposed* to hurt from a few minutes uncovered outdoors. There was an annual youth group retreat to Up North (about 200 miles further north from where we lived) each December. I'm missing the cross-country skiing and ice skating and broomball and downhill tubing, and drinking hot cider and eating ice cream outside in the chill.
