Leaving Brooklyn this afternoon, I saw billowing, towering stormclouds out to the west, slowly coming over and in. I took a couple pictures and went on my way, cursing this to be one of the rare days I went out without an umbrella and understanding that I was going home and if I got wet, no harm done. Even if they looked particularly ominous. Not even any texture to them: flat, hard gray, weighing so heavy the sky moved around them.

At the transfer point in Manhattan, I saw a lot of shaken umbrellas and one spot over the tracks - just one - where the water was coming through hard and steady. A singular two-foot rainfall.

When I got out at my stop and saw all the slick flooring just before the steps out, I was pretty well ready to speed back to spend as little time in the rain as I could, except then I saw two people walking down the steps, totally dry.

The time it took me to get to Manhattan was long enough for the storm to move on. I missed it entirely. Not the ecstatic greens and blues that come after a storm, the clarity of color that arrives; I didn't miss out on any of that. Just the storm that made it possible.

What timing.

Oaths are over, on to Strange Work! I'm very excited for Avodah Zarah, because I failed out of Avodah Zarah last cycle so that means that the beginning part is going to be review. Also because "I'm doing Avodah Zarah" jokes never ever get old. I also anticipate not quite Kesuvos levels of not spelling the masechta name consistently, but those ending h's are a deliberate choice made for consistency for this paragraph that may not ever get repeated.

Here are my remaining notes on Shevuos:

When she got the parrot, the shelter told her he had been found on the side of a highway, which sounded like the sort of charming tale meant to encourage a certain sort of person toward adoption of an otherwise questionable pet. It would have been a charming surprise when the bird started talking, if she had been able to understand him or even recognize the language. As it was, it took her ages to work out the strange land from which he had come, and the fae folk there never quite let her live down the fact that her pet spoke better than she did even after years among them.

LJIDOL Wheel of Chaos week 1 prompt: QUALITY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

		Quality over Quantity

Quality over Quantity is easier said than done
when food is a desert and cola is cheap
“nutritionally dense food only,” we tout
                                  we crow
proud of ourselves for having money
                              education
                              time
as if
as if it grew from the earth
& we all have equal access
well, i'm here to tell you
         it's lies
         all of it lies
none of it but the fruit grows on trees
& we hoard like villains in a disney movie
         doling out poison
         dressed pretty in needed calories
giving the people nothing but disdain when they bite the candy apple
& goddess forbid
         the poor treat themselves
         to anything else
         fresh meat
         fresh veggies
or horror of horrors: a cake
we judge and we judge and we judge
harshest critics of our sisters
meanest to our brothers
we judge them all
secretly eating snickers in our bathrobes
hypocrites R us in america
we like to judge
               to think we are better
we like to think that we CHOSE
        Quality over Quantity of calorie
but really our social status chose
         for us

Because I am an ambitious mad-woman, I ordered some yarn for a new bedspread I want to make to go with our new bedroom. So three shades of brown and three shades of green for the forest glade vibe. That's around 75 skeins of cotton (which as it turned out was on sale AND pretty cheap to begin with). Which is apparently being sent in SIX packages! With a 'ready for shipment' email for each individual one. I expect there will be as many again for each step of their journey to me. I am drowning in emails from this company. My inbox has not had so many emails in it since I learned to keep it tidy with the archive function.

I'm uncertain about whether this is far too much or not enough. I based the number of skeins on a different project made with the same yarn where that person said they had used 80 and on the picture it looked like it might be a similar sized bed to ours, but bedspread itself a bit smaller than I would like mine to be. I'm planning on a rather looser and more open pattern in mine, though, so that should take up a little less yarn. We'll see how far I get with this.

Can't show you a pattern, it's all in my head. I'm going to do a number of long strips in a mix of the different colours and join them together at the end, and then probably some sort of border around it. So sort of very basic patchwork-y, only in crochet.

(pretty certain I'm going to need more yarn, actually...)

Strategies.

Of late, I've tried to derive some entertainment value of sitting and waiting for people to stop talking so I don't interrupt them because that's about the only way to get through it with any composure. There's people I've met who can go for long minutes without giving me any indications they want me to talk. I'm tempted to see if raising my hand does anything, or getting up and moving.

I know I could theoretically interrupt them, but every person who has this trait would have to be yelled at for them to hear me talking. Though now I'm also tempted to try to just start talking in a normal volume, ignoring everything they're saying, just to see that reaction.

1.6 sure was a combination of "funny" and "I cannot look at the screen". So there's that. It's still entertaining but I may be getting to the point where I have to fast forward through my extreme embarrassment squick going on with Ratthi when it comes to Pin-Lee.

The situation: Arada and Pin-Lee are married. Arada wants to bring Ratthi into their relationship; they've had a third in their relationship before and it hasn't worked out. Pin-Lee isn't really into the idea, it's being heavily pushed by Arada. Pin-Lee then eventually agrees to it for Arada's sake.

Here's where it gets to the part where I just keep having second-hand embarrassment: Ratthi doesn't know this. Ratthi thinks that both Arada and Pin-Lee are equally happy to have him in the relationship, and he's really really into this relationship. He seems to want this to be permanent and is just really happy with it. And he keeps having interactions with Pin-Lee where Pin-Lee is very uncomfortable and doesn't want to be having these interactions with Ratthi, but, crucially, has not said any of this to Ratthi. Ratthi has no way to know that Pin-Lee isn't as into him as he's into them.

And so we keep getting these moments where Ratthi doesn't fucking know that the person he's trying to have a good faith relationship interaction with does not want this, but yet has never said anything about it.

Somebody please break up Ratthi from Arada/Pin-Lee for the sake of everyone. Or maybe Pin-Lee can actually say something, rather than seemingly 1) being content to suffer in silence for the sake of the Arada/Pin-Lee relationship (Arada has never said Ratthi was a necessary addition to the Arada/Pin-Lee relationship for the sake of its continuance), or 2) expecting someone in this relationship to read their mind and magically divine their discomfort and break it up for them.

I suspect this was added to the show for narrative reasons, including mirroring with the Sanctuary Moon stuff (still delightful, still clear that everyone involved in that is having the time of their life), but zomg. It is excruciating.

I honestly should stop by the ETG thrift store and see if I can get a different dress, though - my options are long pants and sleeves, or a bright red dress, which seems... well, anyway. It's a great dress in most other contexts, though. (Maybe a skirt? I could find a skirt and a nice short-sleeved top? Then again, if this weather continues the way it has been I might be better off bundled up! It's mid-June and my heater is on.)

The onset of summer weather has dried out soil, especially in garden pots, to the point that even the most root-bound plants seem light enough to blow away. Reports indicate some have begun doing just that, with reports coming in of flying petunias and drifting daffodils trailing roots as they wander lonely as a cloud. It remains to be seen if they are simply at the mercy of the winds in their lightened state, or if this is a deliberate attempt at migration in search of water.

The day's plans of meeting a friend of a friend and seeing a Broadway show were scuttled by the star of the show having to back out at the last minute due to a small injury. As the friend of a friend had come to the city to see Orville Peck more than he'd come to see Cabaret, we decided that he'd be better off refunding the tickets.

I knew the neighborhood a little bit, so I took us four blocks north and one block west to go from the city people visit to the city people live in, going from having a bite and some coffee at a tourist destination to doing the same at a local coffee and sandwich place. He ordered a gabagool sandwich and a pink iced chai latte, and I just had a pink latte. Afterwards, we went to a record store and he found a vinyl Ney Matogrosso album, which was a surprise because he's apparently hard to find in the US on pretty much any format, but especially vinyl.

Not long after, we went our separate ways, him to Brooklyn and the friends he was staying with and me to my apartment to finish folding laundry and cook some lunches for the coming week. I could fixate on the misfortune, or I could look at how we managed to made the best of things.
