In a very cynical attempt to wrest the media coverage away from Obama's fantastic acceptance speech, McCain has announced his VP pick: the first-term governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin.

Apparently McCain believes that he can pick off some of Hillary Clinton's former supporters by choosing a female VP candidate: that women won't notice that this woman is as anti-choice and anti-feminist as you can get, at the same time that he hopes those very positions of hers will reinforce his standing with the Religious Reich. Clever attempt to play both ends, but I think it's doomed to failure.

The Clinton supporters will not fail to notice her beliefs and positions on the issues, and the Religious Reich will not fail to notice her gender.

No if he'd gone with Michael Palin, then I might have considered voting for him...

Add in that she is anti-gay rights, a life time member of the NRA and her husband (when not a fisherman) works for BP (as in British Petroleum) on the North Slope.

I want to ask the McCain camp "What Eva Braun or Mrs Atila the Hun not available?"

Don't forget Evita Duarte, and she even has a biographical musical!

I am looking forward to the Family Values section of the Right attempting the gymnastics it will require to explain supporting a woman who has five kids and went back to work immediately after having a baby with Down's Syndrome. Seeing as how if that were a description of any female Democratic candidate, they'd absolutely excoriate her, this should be entertaining.

I think that is why for the first time, in a long time, I am actually looking forwarded to the VP debate(s). I have a feeling its going to take a boat load of cart wheels and triple axels when the Right gets to that.

Why do I think we have just seen the beginning of a colossal train wreck.

I think it is a canny choice. It is not more, or less, calculating than Obama picking Biden to bolster his "lack of experience" detractors. Each party picks a VP to shore up what they perceive as an exploitable weakness in their slate. In the grand scheme of things, VP seldom matters. (Just ask John Adams.)

I worry about McCain's VP choice because of his age and health history. If he were to die in office, what's Palin's background? Beauty pageant circuit, reporter on smalltown TV station, mayor of a very small town (population 5,500) -- that's all she'd done, before she was appointed to an Alaskan ethics commission and made a name for herself as a whistle-blower. This led to her surprise upset election as Alaska's governor.

None of this is bad. She's had almost two years of experience as governor of Alaska, and by all accounts has done well.

But she has no Washington experience, no experience dealing with diverse interests, not a bit of foreign policy exposure, and no experience as a legislator.

Obama is rightly criticized for having little experience. I intend to vote for him anyway, but I admit that I wish he had more experience. But he has been a US Senator for the past four years, learning how Washington works. He spent seven years in the Illinois legislature, and twelve years as a professor of constitutional law; plus he spent enough time in foreign countries as a boy to have a solid understanding and appreciation of how America is seen through foreign eyes. I don't worry about him fumbling the White House.

(yes, *that* Andrew Tanenbaum, Ph.D., expat and votemaster at electoral-vote.com) seems to agree with you, if you read back through his pre-veep coverage.

Hope the storm doesn't find you at all. ;-)
