LiveStrong Day
May. 16th, 2008 07:58 amBecause one of $COMPANY's vice-presidents was recently diagnosed with cancer, $COMPANY decided to sponsor a cancer charity. They chose the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and announced "LiveStrong Day". Each department or team would come up with a fundraising game, with company-provided prizes, and then we'd have a day of playing them, a barbecue, and a charity walk.
My team did a "Closest to the Pin" golf contest. Amanda went to a local golf course and talked them into sending their greenskeeper out to set a real hole and flag (helps to be young and cute), and we borrowed some pitching wedges and balls, and set up a canopy out on the lawn.
Other games included darts, music trivia (name that tune), a water balloon dunk tank, and so on. Even though the day started out with a thunderstorm, it turned out to be the one passable day of weather all week, and I even got a bit of sunburn on my forehead. I don't think anyone worked more than an hour or two all day: it was like playing hooky right on our own campus.
I even won a Best Buy giftcard for getting the highest score in the dicerolling game. And I play diceless rpg's!
In total, between the North Dakota location and here, we took in $8900, which $COMPANY will match, so our total donation to LAF is $17,800. Not too shabby. It seems likely that we might have this again next year, possibly with more notice to allow even better planning, and possibly inviting families to the whole event rather than just the afterhours barbecue and walk (that I didn't stay for).
