On a quasi-regular basis, we have "Conversations with the CEO". He gathers a group of employees, we get a catered lunch, and a chance to have a smallish-group conversation. Due to department demographics, this was a group of about twenty men and three women.

Among other, more-serious topics, such as the difficulty of recruiting new programmers--I'd specifically asked about recruiting of women--and immediately after I asked about whether we'd be offered domestic partner health insurance, one guy asked for a change in the dress code.

Mike: I would like a change in the dress code to allow shorts.

CEO: You mean you'd wear shorts everyday, right now?

Mike: Yes.

CEO: You'd rather have shorts than medical insurance?

Mike: I don't get sick.

Me: How about, we drop the gender specific part and let all y'all wear skirts?

CEO: I'll wear a skirt if you will...

Mike: You're on!

Room: You don't know Mike very well, do you.

Jason: [I forget the exact wording] ... wear drawers with your skirt?

Me: That's how you know whether it's a kilt or a skirt!

The horrible, dead boring, long-ass meeting was indeed at fault for the failure of my lunch plans.

Said employee meeting had exactly one thing going for it. It was not begun with an invocation (read: prayer). Instead we had a moment of silence. In its way, a huge improvement.

Oh, and during Yet Another Discussion of the Dress Code™, someone asked whether there was a policy on underwear (cf this). Thankfully the HR director said no, but she also said something about underwear being a sensitive issue and one that would be handled directly with one's supervisor or with her. If anyone ever even thinks about giving me trouble about whether or not I wear underwear to work, they'll be hit with a sexual harassment suit so fast they'll fall over. What I wear (or don't wear) under my clothes is nobody's business but mine.
