What is it about Septembers?
Sep. 17th, 2002 01:48 pmI can spend all year peacefully doing nothing special, a weekend out here and there, but come September everything lands in one month. Travel plans, parties, disasters, all in a jumble.
... I had a miscarriage and spent one overnight in the hospital. Just one day after my 13 week doctor visit when she had told me that everything looked good and I was past the danger of miscarriage. Mom came down from Wisconsin to console me the following weekend. I made cinnamon rolls because it made me feel better to do something productive.
A week later Ray's dad had a bicycle accident. We stayed in the ER waiting room all night and went almost every night for six weeks to visit him in the ICU and later the recovery ward. One of those days had been a blood drive here at work. It was really too soon for me to donate after the miscarriage, but I didn't know any better. I almost fainted at the hospital.
... An anomaly among recent Septembers. Nothing memorable happened, I was seven months pregnant and looking forward to Rosa's imminent birth.
... Was probably the month in which my marriage fell irretrievably apart. We had what became our last appointment with the last in our series of marriage counselors, in which he proposed a trial period of polyamory. I remember I was standing in the parking lot outside his office, thanking the gods someone had finally suggested something that might help, when Ray announced, "I will have nothing more to do with Dr. Zem or his ideas. I stand for the Truth." Capital letter very clearly enunciated.
... Labor Day weekend in Boston, complete with both delights and disappointments. The ghastly terror attacks. My first ACN, which was a combination of depressing and painful with gleeful and exciting. Much lawyerly divorce stuff.
... Labor Day weekend with wombats in Chicago. Another ACN coming up. Painting and fixing up my bedroom. Christine's wedding.

Today's "Too Cool For Words" Awards
Sep. 17th, 2002 11:39 pmToday's winner of the far too cool for words award: Wombat. Wow. What a community we have. I feel so at home there, for the first time really anywhere, cyberspace or otherwise. It's like a big extended family; not everyone gets along all the time, but when someone needs help, someone else is always there to step in. And the rest of the time, there's conversation and connection and massive amounts of flirting. ;-)
Runner-up, which would have won on most any other day: Lego Hogwarts Castle! I've had it for quite a while, finally got it down and put it together. I'd been holding off because I was afraid Rosa would lose all the pieces, but she was really good. Helped me find the ones I wanted, helped me pick them up when they inevitably did fall on the floor, and didn't break anything at all.
There are secret doors and compartments and walls that move and ooh, it's brilliant!
Now I'm going to end up buying the Hogwarts Express and gods know what other modules from the set.
